The County of Riverside proclaimed a local emergency in response to the Airport Fire The blaze has scorched more than 23,000 acres throughout Orange and Riverside Counties and is currently 5% contained.
The emergency proclamation will be presented to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors for ratification at its next regularly scheduled board meeting on September 17.
This emergency proclamation could make the county eligible for potential federal and state assistance, including repairs to damaged areas in public spaces. Additionally, it could expedite the county’s ability to procure items necessary for emergency response and repair.
The Airport Fire started on September 9. According to Orange County Fire Authority Deputy Chief TJ McGovern, Orange County Public Works staff accidentally started the fire when a spark from heavy equipment happened as they were placing boulders to block off vegetation on Trabuco Creek Road near the remote-controlled airplane airport,
Personnel from fire departments, law enforcement agencies, emergency management departments, animal services agencies, and other partners are actively responding to the incident.
