The Canyon Lake Fire Department has announced its honorees for 2024 Firefighter of the Year and Reserve of the Year, recognizing two individuals for their exceptional service and dedication.
Fire Engineer Humberto “Chico” Sanchez has been selected as the 2024 Firefighter of the Year, while James Sanchez, no relation to Chico, has been selected as the department’s Reserve of the Year. Both honorees were chosen for their significant contributions to the department and their embodiment of its Core Values of P.R.I.D.E. (Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, and Excellence).
The Firefighter of the Year and Reserve of the Year awards celebrate individuals who consistently go above and beyond in their roles, setting an example for their peers and ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents they serve.
Chico has been with the department since it launched on January 1, 2022. For months, Chico had been working on completing his task book to become an acting captain and was quickly put into the position to fill the vacancy created when Battalion Chief Michael Samuels retired in July.
Chico was also an integral part of the recent fire engineer testing process, serving as the department’s liaison to the external proctors. Leading up to the testing process, Chico was a mentor to all the candidates and ensured they were well-prepared for the process.
Beyond his operational duties, Chico serves as a board member of the Canyon Lake Firefighters Association and has made numerous contributions that are mutually beneficial for both the Canyon Lake Fire Department and the Canyon Lake Firefighters Association. Both organizations have a common goal of serving the community of Canyon Lake and providing exceptional service.
James, who has also been with the department since its inception, has had an exceptionally busy and productive year. In addition to fulfilling his reserve firefighter requirements, James completed paramedic school, a process that took more than a year to complete.
While in paramedic school, James worked up to five additional shifts per month at the fire station, demonstrating his commitment to both the department and the community.
James also earned his bachelor’s degree in fire protection administration and technology from California State University, Los Angeles. Despite his demanding academic and training schedule, James went above and beyond by volunteering for nearly every city and department event.
James’ hard work and dedication culminated in a major milestone on December 1, when he was hired as a full-time firefighter/paramedic with the Canyon Lake Fire Department. This achievement marks the next chapter in his career, reflecting his perseverance, skill, and passion for serving the residents of Canyon Lake.
