Testing at Railroad Canyon Dam may cause rotten egg odor

Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD) will be conducting equipment testing at Railroad Canyon Dam on Monday, January. 27. This testing helps ensure the dam operates safely and reliably.

The testing involves opening and closing valves several times throughout the day, which may cause a temporary rotten egg odor in Canyon Lake and possibly Canyon Hills. Wind conditions may affect how far the odor travels and how long it lasts.

According to EVMWD, the odor, caused by natural materials in the lake, is not harmful and typically dissipates quickly.

During the testing, residents may notice some changes in lake levels, noise from the equipment, and increased truck activity near the dam.

EVMWD plans to complete another test in a few weeks after upgrading additional equipment.
