The Riverside County Sheriff’s Perris Station will conduct a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Checkpoint on Friday, May 2, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the City of Perris.
DUI checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary goal of these checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said Sergeant Jeremy Bracey. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
The Perris Sheriff’s Station reminds the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol use. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may also impair driving. While both medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended driver’s license.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
