A Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station deputy was arrested on Thursday and booked on four felony counts of unauthorized computer access.
On May 8, investigators from the Lake Mathews Sheriff’s Station opened an investigation into 41-year-old Deputy Michael Gene Schmidt of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, who allegedly accessed confidential information obtained from government databases for personal use.
Schmidt was arrested on August 7 in the City of Murrieta and booked on four counts of unauthorized computer access. His bail was set at $40,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 18.
Schmidt has been with the department since October 2008, most recently assigned to the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station. He has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
