The Canyon Lake City Council approved a police department patch and badge for its new police department, set to launch on or before the end of August 2026.
The patch design mirrors the Canyon Lake Fire Department’s patch but features a blue color scheme to represent law enforcement. Its imagery reflects a waterfront community, highlighting Canyon Lake’s identity, with the lighthouse symbolizing guidance and protection.
The badge design incorporates patriotic elements, combining the eagle and U.S. flag with official insignia to represent authority and service within Canyon Lake. The California state seal is placed prominently in the center.
Alongside approving the patch and badge designs, the council approved the vehicles for the new department. The black law enforcement vehicles will feature the city’s police badge and seal, along with gold and white lettering.
The council also awarded the construction contract for the new police department building to Lowe Construction, Inc., in the amount of $637,230. Work on the project is scheduled to start this week, with an anticipated completion around November 21.
The creation of the Canyon Lake Police Department comes after the city formally notified the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department that it will terminate its law enforcement contract and establish its own police department by the end of August 2026. This major step marks a significant shift toward localized public safety services.
As part of the process, the city also adopted an ordinance recognizing the formation of the police department—a key step toward joining the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) program. Participation in POST will ensure the department meets the state’s professional standards for training and certification.
With the patch, badge, vehicles, and building plans now approved, the city is steadily moving forward in its historic effort to establish a self-operated police department dedicated to protecting and serving the community.
