With waterways expected to be especially busy during Labor Day weekend, California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is reminding recreational boaters and water enthusiasts to prioritize safety while on the water. With waterways busier during Labor Day weekend, taking simple precautions can help save lives and prevent accidents.
To reduce risks, DBW emphasizes wearing life jackets, boating sober, staying alert to changing conditions, and knowing navigation rules.
“Labor Day is a great time to enjoy California’s lakes, rivers and coastlines, but increased activity on the water means we all must be even more vigilant,” DBW Deputy Director Ramona Fernandez said. “Wearing a life jacket, understanding the local water conditions, and avoiding alcohol while boating are small steps that can make a big difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone.”
DBW offers the following boating safety tips for Labor Day weekend:
- Wear a life jacket: State law requires all children under 13 to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on a moving vessel. DBW encourages everyone, regardless of age or swimming ability, to wear one.
- Carry your California Boater Card: All boaters, regardless of age, are required to carry a valid California Boater Card while operating a boat. The card demonstrates completion of an approved boating safety course.
- Check the weather and water conditions: Sudden weather changes can be especially dangerous on the water. Monitor local forecasts and avoid boating in high winds, thunderstorms or low visibility.
- File a float plan: Let someone on land know your trip itinerary, including your expected return time and route. This helps emergency responders locate you more quickly if something goes wrong.
- Boat Sober: Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not only dangerous but illegal. Designate a sober operator for every trip.
- Know the waterway: Water levels and access can vary. Check for closures or restrictions before heading out, even in areas you know well.
