Moreno Valley deputy-involved shooting follows residential fire

A deputy-involved shooting early Sunday morning in Moreno Valley left one man dead.

At approximately 12:35 a.m., deputies assigned to the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to reports of a residential fire in the 16000 block of Heather Glen Road in Moreno Valley, where dispatch received multiple reports of a man intentionally setting a fire inside the residence.

When deputies arrived, they found the residence fully engulfed in flames. They were informed that a suspect was lying on the ground in the rear of the residence. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect failed to comply with verbal commands and pointed a firearm at the deputies. A deputy-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was struck by gunfire.

Deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived and transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. No other injuries were reported in this incident.

Per department policy, the deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The investigation is active and ongoing.
