The rain and wind on Saturday morning didn’t stop volunteers Fran Tibbet, Debby Gagnon, Karen Bevans, Brandi Nakakihara, and Sawyer Malone from erecting the Field of Honor in the Veterans Memorial Park in the Towne Center.
A Canyon Lake Veterans Day tradition, the Field of Honor consists of 200 flags that honor veterans and current service members.
Residents had the opportunity to honor their loved ones with a flag for a $10 donation. All proceeds go toward the Canyon Lake Veterans Day Celebration fund.
In previous years, each purchased flag featured a yellow ribbon with the name of the honoree in it. This year, each flag bears a red star with the name of the honoree on it.
Also new this year, the members of Boy Scout Troop 2011 cut out stars from retired flags and attached one to each of the purchased flags along with the following note:
“I am part of our American flag that has flown over the USA. I can not longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten.”
The flags will remain in the park until November 14. Residents who purchased a flag may pick up their flag and take it home on November 13.
The flags for the Field of Honor are donated by the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce.
