Anglers Randy Milner and Dan Ke had quite a carp fishing session in Canyon Lake, achieving two rare catches within about an hour on June 21.

Fishing at the north end of the main lake, the duo landed four fish in total, with two being notably rare for Canyon Lake.

First, Ke caught a 17-pound mirror carp. About an hour later, Milner reeled in a 15-pound orange and black koi with black eyes. To catch a mirror carp and a koi on the same day at Canyon Lake is an extraordinary feat, showcasing their impressive fishing skills and a bit of luck.

“These fish are very hard to catch in any of the lakes and reservoirs in California,” Ke said. “Koi are in the carp family and usually find their way into the lakes and reservoirs in California when people release their pets into these waters. They are probably more rare and harder to catch than mirror carp.”

The angers used artificial floating corn as bait, employing a European style of fishing for carp.
