A candlelight vigil in honor of Deputy Darnell Calhoun will be held on Tuesday, January 17, at 6 p.m. at the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station, 333 Limited Ave.
Deputy Culhaun, 30, was fatally shot while responding to a call on Friday, January 13, in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane in the unincorporated area of Lakeland Village.
As Deputy Calhoun approached the residence, the suspect began shooting at him, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
As an additional deputy arrived, the suspect engaged him with gunfire. The suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Jesse Navarro of Lake Elsinore, was wounded and taken to a local hospital. He remains in critical condition.
Deputy Calhoun sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center by sheriff’s deputies, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Deputy Calhoun was a husband and a father of two boys, ages two and four, and a third baby boy on the way.
The shooting comes two weeks after Riverside County Deputy Isaiah Cordero was fatally shot while attempting a traffic stop in the City of Jurupa Valley. He was 32 years old.
