As we step into 2026, the Canyon Lake Insider reflects on some of the memorable news stories and events of 2025 that brought the Canyon Lake community together.
From fundraisers and seasonal celebrations to achievements by residents, 2025 was filled with milestones and moments of connection that strengthened community bonds.
January
In January 2025, a New Year’s Day golf cart accident on the causeway sent four minors to the hospital with minor injuries.
Community Patrol reported 183 calls for service in January. Marine Patrol reported 46 calls for service.
Resident Joan Ke celebrated the remarkable achievement of walking 1,096 consecutive days, the equivalent of three years.
The Jr. Women’s Club hosted a Fill-the-Truck Clothing Drive to benefit victims of the Los Angeles fires.
Due to ongoing issues with guest access and inadequate customer support, the POA transitioned from its current gate access company, dwellingLive, to a new provider, GoAccess.
On January 7, the POA honored Dr. Brian Wood as January Member of the Month. A homeowner since 2015, Dr. Wood was recognized for his contributions to the community through his volunteer efforts and leadership roles.
On January 8, the city honored resident Monica Lyons as Citizen of the Month. Lyons was recognized for her outstanding contributions to animal welfare. The city also honored resident Suzy Bowman for opening her home to host a dinner for 30 Marines from Camp Pendleton, providing them with a warm and welcoming holiday experience while stationed away from their families.
On January 9, the Canyon Lake Fire Department and Cal Fire Engine 94 responded to a residential fire in the 22000 block of Bronc Court. The fire was contained to the chimney.
On January 11, the Bassmasters Club held its first club tournament of 2025. Terry Nordsleck and Travis Smith secured first place with a fish weight of 18.13, anchored by the tournament’s biggest bass at 4.84 lbs. Damon Hole and Rich Tucker reeled in second place, tipping the scale with 17.39 lbs.
On January 12, a memorial service was held for longtime resident Joanna Spiller, who passed away in December 2024. A member of the Canyon Lake Lioness/Lions Club since 1990, Spiller was named Canyon Lake’s Volunteer of the Year in 2003, Citizen of the Year in 2014, and grand marshal of the Fiesta Day parade in 2018.
On January 13, a new bench was installed at Gault Field in honor of the late Eric Frega, a resident and father of two boys who dedicated five years to coaching youth baseball before he succumbed to cancer in 2024.
On January 21, a fatal motorcycle accident on Railroad Canyon Road claimed the life of 64-year-old Danny Feeley of Wildomar.
The Community Gardeners Club hosted a rock painting event on January 25 at the Eastport Activities Building.
The Bassmasters Club held its annual end-of-year banquet on January 25, celebrating its top 2024 anglers and introducing its 2025 board members. Kevin Hugo earned the prestigious Angler of the Year title, while Jim Wright was honored as Sportsman of the Year for his dedication and sportsmanship throughout the season.
On January 27, the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District conducted equipment testing at the dam. The testing involved opening and closing the valves several times throughout the day, which caused a temporary “rotten egg” odor.
February
The city announced the launch of its new Alert Canyon Lake notification system. The system is designed to alert residents via text or email about critical events and updates such as power outages, severe weather, and other important notifications.
The February Community Patrol report highlighted 173 calls for service, with staff issuing 31 warnings, 110 citations to members, 57 citations to guests, and 1 citation to a service provider.
The POA announced the addition of three electric bikes to the Community Patrol fleet, enhancing mobility and efficiency for patrol officers throughout the community.
The city honored Mindy and Jeff LaTendresse as February Citizens of the Month.
On February 3, golfer Vern Kelch suffered a heart attack on the golf course. The quick response of his fellow golfers and the availability of an AED on-site were crucial in saving his life.
On February 4, the POA honored Ronda McCord as the February Member of the Month.
On February 4, the POA Board of Directors approved $36,762.57 for two new speed trailers.
On February 15, a pedestrian was injured after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Railroad Canyon Road shortly before 11 p.m. He was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center with moderate injuries.
The Tennis Club hosted a Valentine’s Tennis Tournament on February 15.
On February 18, a 25-year-old Lake Elsinore man was arrested in Canyon Lake for firearms and narcotics violations after the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station’s Special Enforcement Team received reports of a suspicious person in the 31600 block of Railroad Canyon Road.
The Canyon Lake Fire Department held a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training workshop from February 21 through February 23 at City Hall. The program is designed to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and train them in basic disaster response skills.
To help residents prepare for spring planting, the Community Gardeners Club hosted a free seed workshop on February 22 at the Community Garden.
In preparation for Canyon Lake Little League’s spring season, the league held a Field Clean-Up Day on February 22, inviting parents, players, coaches, and community members to join the effort.
On February 23, the Jr. Women’s Club held a community Pickleball Tournament fundraiser to raise money for millionkids.org, an organization dedicated to combating human trafficking.
On February 28, deputies screened 1195 vehicles during a DUI Checkpoint at the intersection of Railroad Canyon Road and Sorrel Lane. The operation resulted in four DUI-related arrests, 23 citations, 13 citations for unlicensed/suspended drivers, and one citation for a suspended license. Seven vehicles were towed.
March
The fire department reported 79 calls for service.
Community Patrol reported 224 calls for service. In addition to 35 warnings, staff issued 99 citations to members, 56 citations to guests, and 1 citation to a service provider.
The POA implemented a new security measure requiring handbag and purse checks before entry to concerts held at the lodge. This decision was in response to incidents of concertgoers sneaking in outside alcohol, which violates the POA’s policies.
On March 4, the POA Board of Directors honored residents Bobby Gunter, Walt Popper, Bob Stinson, Ron Kupke, and Golf Pro Shop employee Theo Delehanty for saving the life of 78-year-old Vern Kelch, who went into cardiac arrest on the golf course after teeing off on hole three on February 3. The group was commended for their courage and quick thinking, recognizing their heroic efforts in a moment of crisis.
On March 4, the POA Board of Directors approved $556,824 in funding to update the sports lighting at Gault Field.
On March 8, the Mermaids of Canyon Lake Club held its 3rd Annual Lucky Siren’s Casino Night at the senior center. The 21-and-over event featured a catered buffet, bottomless beverages and spirits, a silent auction, and casino-style games.
Canyon Lake Little League’s Opening Day was held on March 8.
On March 9, the community came together for the 2nd Annual Hope Lights the Night luminary event, a heartfelt evening hosted by Michelle’s Place Cancer Resource Center in partnership with the Mermaids of Canyon Lake Club. The event, which celebrates life and honors those impacted by cancer, included moving speeches, a moment of silence to remember those lost to cancer, live music, and food trucks.
The 9ers Golf Club held its Holey Shillelagh Scholarship Golf Tournament on March 15.
On March 20, 26 members of the Yacht Club embarked on an excursion to the King Harbor Yacht Club in Redondo Beach. The group enjoyed appetizers and drinks, followed by an offshore cruise around the marina on a 55-foot yacht and dinner at the clubhouse.
On March 22, the Yacht Club hosted a Learn to Drive a Boat clinic for residents 12 and older.
The Tennis Club served up some fun with a St. Patrick’s Day-themed tournament on March 22.
On March 23, the Lions Club held a Bingo Bash fundraiser at the lodge to raise money for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Canyon Lake-based Helping Hands Group.
Canyon Lake received an alum treatment the week of March 24.
On March 25, the community mourned the loss of Margaret McCoy, a longtime resident and owner of Coldwell Banker Associated Brokers Realty.
April
The city officially ended its relationship with Culture Cannabis Club after the company failed to meet a critical payment deadline tied to a previously negotiated settlement agreement.
The fire department reported 98 calls for service.
Community Patrol report 284 calls for service. In addition to 42 warnings, staff issued 64 citations to members, 77 citations to guests, and three citations to service providers.
On April 1, the POA Board of Directors approved the Young Old People’s Club (YOP-C) as a sanctioned club. YOP-C is a group of residents aged 50 and older who are “young at heart” and interested in making new friendships while enjoying social events, dinners, outings, and charity activities.
The Jr. Women’s Club hosted its annual Charity Golf Tournament on April 5.
On April 6, a lighting structure on Field 2 at Gault Field collapsed onto the batting cages, raising concerns among community members who had complained about the aging structure before it fell.
The city held a “Spring Into Giving” Food and Essentials Drive from April 2 through April 10. The initiative aimed to support local families in need by collecting nonperishable food and essential hygiene products for three local food pantries: Dream Center Food Pantry, The Concerned Family, and Helping Hands.
On April 5, the Community Gardeners Club hosted a Succulent Fairy Basket Workshop, offering community members an opportunity to create one-of-a-kind succulent fairy baskets.
On April 9, the city honored Fire Captain Tim O’Marra for his unwavering dedication to the fire department’s kitchen remodel project. O’Marra, a resident and founding member of the department, stepped up to lead the renovation effort, devoting countless hours.
On April 12, about 25 community members participated in the Yacht Club’s Lake Clean-Up Day.
The city held its annual Community Clean-up and Shredding event on April 12 in the Canyon Lake Community Church parking lot.
The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Pub Crawl on April 12.
The Canyon Lake Little League hosted an Easter Trunk and Hunt on April 14.
On April 19, the Canyon Lake Fire Department and the Canyon Lake Firefighters Association joined forces to recognize the vital contributions of dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. They provided dinner for 15 on-duty dispatchers at the Perris Emergency Command Center as a gesture of appreciation for their dedication and service.
On April 20, Center Church held an Easter sunrise service at Holiday Harbor Park.
On April 25, the Woman’s Club hosted its annual Fashion Show at the lodge. The Gatsby/Zelda theme featured an evening of glamour, fashion, cocktails, and cuisine.
On April 25, residents Ginny and Chris Papavero made a remarkable debut at the Elsinore Woman’s Club 69th Annual Flower Show, earning 12 awards for their 11 entries.
The Yacht Club hosted the annual Opening Day of Boating Season and Blessing of the Boats on April 26, signaling the official start of boating season in Canyon Lake.
The Canyon Lake Association of Past Presidents (CLAPPS) held its annual Beautification Golf Tournament on April 26. Proceeds from the tournament go toward golf course beautification projects.
The Community Garage Sale was held on April 26 and 27.
The city purchased a commercial building in the Canyon Lake Towne Center for $1,452,364. The purchase was completed on April 30 and recorded in the Rental Enterprise Fund as an investment.
May
The annual assessment for homeowners was raised $15 per month, bringing the annual dues from $4,020 ($335 per month) to $4,200 ($350 per month).
The fire department reported 105 calls for service.
Community Patrol reported 346 calls for service. In addition to 23 warnings, staff issued 70 citations to members, 46 citations to guests, and one citation to a service provider.
For the first time ever, homeowners were able to vote electronically in the POA election.
At the May meeting, the city council approved an amendment to Chapter 12.04 of the Canyon Lake Municipal Code, officially establishing the 45 mph speed limit on Railroad Canyon Road within city limits.
Canyon Lake homeowners elected Bill Medved, incumbent Jeff Bill, and write-in candidate Lanie Cooney to the POA Board of Directors during the Annual Meeting of the Members and Election of Directors on May 16.
The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce announced Canyon Lake Mobile as Business of the Month.
The POA announced that it had identified the primary suspect in a vandalism incident that caused damage to the north ski area pavilion the previous month. Two individuals caused approximately $2,300 in damage by intentionally burning the deck using electric motorcycles.
On May 1, members of the community gathered on the terrace at the lodge for Canyon Lake’s 12th Annual National Day of Prayer. The keynote speaker was Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin.
The Guild held its Fleetwood Mac tribute concert on May 3 at the lodge.
A golf cart overturned on May 3 near Vacation Drive and Old Wrangler Road, resulting in three individuals being transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.
The Canyon Lake Choraleers performed Bond & Beyond on May 9 at the lodge.
The fire department held its 3rd Annual Open House on May 10. The event featured station tours, live firefighting demonstrations, a free lunch, activities for kids, a balloon artist, a face painter, and an up-close look at the fire engines and equipment.
Nine-year-old resident Maddy Gomez had an exciting moment to remember on May 17, when she took to the pitcher’s mound to throw the ceremonial first pitch at the Lake Elsinore Storm baseball game. Maddy earned the special honor through a fundraiser organized by the Lake Elsinore Girls Softball League,
The Ski Club hosted its May Open sanctioned water ski tournament on May 17 and 18.
The city continued its Memorial Day tradition of placing an American flag in every yard in the community in honor of the nation’s heroes. Between May 21 and May 23, volunteers helped the city plant 4,800 flags.
Canyon Lake’s most iconic event, Fiesta Day, was held on May 24 and featured a hometown parade and activities at the lodge, Holiday Harbor Park, and Sierra Park.
In a moving tribute to the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, the Quilters of Canyon Lake presented handmade patriotic quilts to five Canyon Lake veterans at a heartfelt ceremony during Fiesta Day on May 24 at the lodge.
Two women were sent to the hospital with head injuries when their golf cart was hit by an SUV on May 24 on Canyon Lake Drive South near Gray Fox Drive. The driver, who fled the scene, was arrested two days later on suspicion of felony hit-and-run with injuries.
On May 25, the POA hosted Countryfest at Holiday Harbor Park. The free community concert featured Ty Herndon, Kody West, Canaan Smith, and A Thousand Horses.
A hit-and-run incident involving a parked vehicle occurred on May 29 in the area of Cruise Circle Drive and Harbor Drive. The driver was later located in the Towne Center and transported to a local hospital for his injuries.
Canyon Lake Community Theatre’s enchanting production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid opened on May 29 at Indian Beach.
The Canyon Lake Association of Men (CLAMS) held its annual charity golf tournament fundraiser on May 31.
June
The Canyon Lake Little League Seniors Division team capped off a dominant season by winning the Tournament of Champions.
The fire department reported 79 calls for service. They included three fire calls, 49 rescue/EMS incidents, eight service calls, fifteen good intent calls, and four false alarms/false calls.
Community Patrol reported 386 calls for service. In addition to 76 warnings, staff issued 128 citations to members, 103 citations to guests, and two citations to service providers.
The city honored 12-year-old Hank Hauger as June Citizen of the Month for his character and responsible actions. Hauger, a sixth-grade high honor roll student at Canyon Lake Middle School, was recognized for assisting a young girl in distress after she crashed her e-bike and ensuring she returned home safely.
Resident Johnny Pineda stepped into the role of president of the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce.
On June 3, the POA Board of Directors approved a fine increase from $100 to $1,000 for the use of fireworks. The fine increases to $3,000 if the violation occurs on a holiday/holiday weekend, such as the Fourth of July. The board also approved $98,802 to resurface the community’s tennis courts.
On June 7, the POA hosted a community lake cleanup in response to the golden algae bloom that caused thousands of fish to wash ashore.
The Canyon Lake Firefighters Association hosted its 3rd Annual Golf Cart Show on June 14 in the Towne Center.
On June 18, the Woman’s Club concluded its last general meeting of the season with a generous show of support for local students and organizations. The club presentation $20,000 in scholarships to Canyon Lake students and $20,000 to organizations that serve local communities.
July
A routine trip to the mailbox turned into a terrifying accident for an elderly couple and their infant granddaughter when a freak accident caused their golf cart to flip, leaving the grandfather pinned underneath. He suffered a serious head injury that required multiple staples.
Fifteen members of the Canyon Lake Ski Club qualified for and competed in the 2025 Western Regionals at Ski West Village in Arvin, California, and earned an impressive 24 medals.
The POA lifted its no full-body contact advisory it issued in response to the golden algae bloom and fish kill.
In the wake of the golden algae bloom, the POA announced the formation of a new Lake Management Committee consisting of residents who have a shared mission to preserve and protect the lake. Committee members will play an important role in developing a long-term strategy to keep the lake clean and healthy.

The POA Board honored Yacht Club Commodore Rob Mora as the July Member of the Month.
The POA Board approved the formation of an Equestrian Center Work Group (ECWG). The role of the ECWG is to advise and assist the POA Board, general manager, and staff, and identify operational improvements, safety enhancements, and member engagement strategies to support the facility and the broader community.
On the morning of July 4, residents Tina and Milton Roller hosted the community’s 21st Annual 4th of July Bike Ride.
The Guild held its Eagles tribute concert on July 19 at the lodge.
The ever-popular week-long Jr. Golf Camp returned on July 22, offering young golfers ages five to 15 a fun and engaging introduction to the sport.
The Sports Stop hosted a free Mediterranean-themed catered dinner for community seniors on July 27 at the senior center.
August
The POA honored Kyler Battleson as the August Member of the Month. Battleson was recognized for consistently showing up for the community through donations and active participation in community events.
At the August city council meeting, the council approved a police department patch and badge for the city’s new police department, set to launch on or before August 31, 2026.
The fire department reported 117 calls for service. They included three fire calls, 83 rescue/EMS incident calls, one hazardous condition call, 13 service calls, nine good intent calls, and eight false alarms/false calls.
Community Patrol report 318 calls for service. In addition to 52 warnings, staff issued 163 citations to members, 64 citations to guests, and one citation to service providers.
The Jr. Women’s Club hosted a School Supply and Clothing Drive on August 2 at Indian Beach.
On August 4, residents Alexis and Steven Prince were driving on Railroad Canyon Road when their vehicle was T-boned. Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to free Steven from the passenger side of the vehicle. Alexis had been knocked unconscious, while Steven drifted in and out of consciousness before both were transported to a local hospital.
On August 8, a female driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries after striking a parked car and overturning her vehicle on Vacation Drive, just a few yards from the fire station.
The Yacht Club hosted the 13th Annual Paddle and Pedal Regatta on August 9 at Indian Beach.
On August 14, resident and business owner Debby Gagnon was one of eight Riverside County seniors honored at the Riverside County Second District’s 3rd Annual Senior Legacy Awards.
The POA hosted Maui Sunday on August 31 at the lodge and Sunset Beach. The end-of-summer celebration featured the professional Polynesian Entertainment Group, complete with traditional hula dancers, Samoan drummers, and fire dances.
September
The POA honored Janine Schrufer as September Member of the Month, recognizing her decades of dedication and service to the community.
Community Patrol reported 319 calls for service. In addition to 45 warnings, staff issued 192 citations to members, 97 citations to guests, and four citations to service providers.
The Lions Club held its community Bingo Bash fundraiser on September 7 at the lodge.
On the morning of September 11, the city and fire department hosted a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the fire station to honor the men, women, and first responders who lost their lives during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Later that evening, the POA hosted a remembrance event at the lodge.
The Little League kicked off its fall season with Opening Day festivities on September 13.
The Woman’s Club hosted a night of fun, flavor, and friendly competition at its annual Hot Autumn Nights Chili Cook-Off on September 14 at the senior center.
The Guild hosted Harborfest on September 20 at Holiday Harbor Park. The free community event featured a Jimmy Buffett tribute concert, food trucks, and vendors.
On September 23, the city announced James Rayls as the city’s new police chief. The announcement marked a major milestone as Canyon Lake prepares to launch its own police department. Rayls is the former captain of the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station.
The Canyon Lake Chamber hosted the 3rd Annual Battle of the Businesses on September 27 at Sierra Park. The spirited competitors battled it out in events such as tug-of-war, a three-legged race, a piggyback ride, limbo, jump rope, hopper balls, disc golf, and a kayak race on the lake.
October
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as a show of support for the nation’s veterans, Canyon Lake firefighters wore pink T-shirts and camouflage hats with lavender lettering throughout October and November.
The city’s Railroad Canyon Road Highway Safety Improvement Project started. The anticipated completion date is February 20, 2026.

On October 2, Mayor Mark Terry delivered the city’s State of the City Address to a packed audience at the lodge. The “Late Night in Paradise” theme put a playful spin on tradition while honoring everything that makes Canyon Lake an exceptional place to live, work, visit, and invest.
During the city’s State of the City Address, the city presented longtime resident Mike Shroyer with the prestigious Jordan Ehrankranz Spirit Award, an honor given to a resident who embodies community spirit and gives selflessly of their time and resources for the betterment of the community.
Hundreds of classic cars rolled into Canyon Lake for the 19th Annual Car Show at the lodge on October 4.
On October 7, the Canyon Lake Association of Past Presidents (CLAPPS) presented a $29,000 to the POA to help fund seven projects at the golf course. The donation represented proceeds from the CLAPPS’ Beautification Golf Tournaments.
In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, the fire department hosted a special storytime at the library on October 10. The engaging program introduced children to fire safety in a fun and interactive way.
The Jr. Women’s Club hosted the 11th Annual Rocktoberfest on October 11 at Holiday Harbor Park.
The 5th Annual Dock-or-Treat was held on October 18. Hosted by the Morris and Brown families, with the support of the Yacht Club, this Halloween event brought the fun of trick-or-treating to the water.
The city hosted its 2nd Annual Pumpkin Bash on October 23 in the Towne Center. The event featured two bands, free attraction rides, pumpkin decorating, and food and merchandise vendors.
On October 25, the Canyon Lake Chamber hosted the 32nd Annual Parade of Frights in the Towne Center. The event featured trick-or-treating, a costume parade and contests, and food and merchandise vendors.
The Guild hosted a Toby Keith tribute concert on October 25 at the lodge.
The Little League hosted a Trunk-or-Treat on October 28 at Gault Field.
On Halloween morning, the usually calm waters came alive with a spellbinding sight—witches and warlocks paddling across the lake in support of breast cancer awareness.
November
The fire department reported 80 calls for service. They included four fire calls, 50 rescue/EMS incident calls, four service calls, 18 good intent calls, and four false alarms/false calls.
The Yacht Club provided Thanksgiving meals to four young mothers transitioning from foster care to independent living.
The 24th Annual Senior Center Holiday Boutique was held on November 8 and 9.
Following a week-long closure for treatment of golden algae, the lake reopen for all recreational activities on November 9.
The city hosted its 17th Annual Veterans Day Celebration on November 11 at Holiday Harbor Park. The celebration featured the American Patriot Music band, patriotic songs performed by the Choraleers, a flyover, a marketplace, speakers, and a free quilt raffle exclusively for veterans.
The Jr. Women’s Club held its annual Sip and Shop Holiday Boutique on November 15 at the lodge.
The city hosted its 14th Annual Turkey and Food Drive on November 20, collecting 377 turkeys.
Canyon Lake Community Church hosted its 16th Annual Many Wonders of Christmas on November 22. The popular holiday event featured a catered lunch, live entertainment, and a Christmas tree raffle.
Dozens of community members kicked off their Thanksgiving morning with some fun, fitness, and community spirit at the annual Turkey Trot on November 27.
In partnership with the Jr. Women’s Club, the POA hosted the 43rd Annual Tree Lighting Festival on November 30 at the lodge. The beloved community event featured free amusement rides and activities, photos with Santa, food trucks, vendors, and more.
December
The city announced the completion of its new police department facility, marking a major milestone in the city’s efforts to establish its own law enforcement services. The facility will centralize law enforcement operations, enhance efficiency, and support Canyon Lake’s transition to independent police services.
City council authorized the city manager to move forward with the purchase of approximately 34.99 acres of vacant land located on the northwest side of Railroad Canyon Road at Canyon Hills Road. The property, known as Goat Hill, was secured for a purchase price of $1.5 million. The property owner gifted more than 50 percent of the property to the city, allowing the city to secure a purchase price significantly below its appraised fair market value of $2,895,000.
For the fourth consecutive year, the fire department participated in the Spark of Love Toy Drive.
On December 6, the Woman’s Club hosted its annual Holiday Home Tour, featuring self-guided tours of five Canyon Lake homes.
