The Canyon Lake Cardboard Boat Race returns on Saturday, September 12, at Indian Beach. The race will follow the Paddle and Pedal Regatta, which kicks off at 9 a.m.
Hosted by the Canyon Lake Yacht Club, the Cardboard Boat Race challenges racers to build their own boat primarily from cardboard, then race it around a designated course. While creativity is encouraged, racers will have to follow specific construction and safety requirements.
Boats must be constructed from corrugated cardboard, although cardboard tubes are allowed. Racers may use duct tape, packing tape, masking tape, and waterproof tape to hold the boat together. Decorations are encouraged.
Racers may not use wood, metal, fiberglass, plastic hulls, foam flotation, inflatable devices, or other materials that provide structural support or flotation.
Paddles may be made from cardboard, or racers may use regular paddles.
Boats must be built ahead of time. Participants in need of cardboard, can call Serenity at 951) 972-8558 and mention the Canyon Lake Yacht Club.
There is a minimum of one person and a maximum of two people per boat.
There will be separate classes for one-person boats, two-person boats, 12-and-under one-person boats and 12-and-under two-person boats.
All participants must wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while on the water. Younger racers must have a parent or guardian present.
The race will start with boats behind a designated starting line. Racers will paddle around a designated course and return to the finish line. Racers may not intentionally interfere with, ram, splash, grab, or damage another boat.
The first eligible boat to completely cross the finish line wins its heat. If a boat sinks or falls apart, the crew may swim it to the finish, but it will not qualify for a finisher award. Judges’ decisions are final.
