The Canyon Lake Chair Volleyball Club held a pep rally on Monday, setting the stage for its anticipated tournament scheduled for Saturday, March 9, at the Sun City Civic Association facility.

Three Canyon Lake teams gear up to compete in the George Barbas Memorial Chair Volleyball Tournament. This exciting competition will feature eight teams vying for victory. Games start at 8:30 a.m. and end at approximately 1:30 p.m. Following the games, an awards ceremony will honor the winners.

Playing on Canyon Lake team 1 are team captain Ann NIckle, Barry Ward, Louie Lancia, Pat Oskey, Eric Schrader, and PJ Anderson. Team two players are team captain Cathy Buell, Nancy Green, Teresa Fidler, Paul Hawker, Melody Clark, and Frank Rodbuck. Playing on team three with team captain Janine Schrufer are Jeanette Williams, Bruce Brattin, Molly Frank, Lynne Trampush, and Jeanette Shortridge.

Fran Tibbet, Diane Monteleone, and Marina Stinson will be serving as line judges.

Last year, the Canyon Lake players won 14 of the 16 games they played against nine teams, earning medals and a team trophy.

The Canyon Lake Chair Volleyball Club was formed in 2008 and became a sanctioned POA club in 2009. The club welcomes new players ages 50 and better. Annual membership is $15.

Practices are held on Monday and Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the lodge. Games are played with a 20-inch beach ball with the players seated in chairs. The net is five feet high, which is two feet lower than a standard volleyball net. Each game is played until one team reaches 15 points or wins by two points.

Because players remain seated during the game, chair volleyball allows those with physical limitations to participate on a level playing field with those who may be more active.
