On June 14, 2023, the Canyon Lake City Council approved a Professional Services Agreement with Interwest Consulting Group for grant management, design services, and construction management services for the city’s Railroad Canyon Road Improvement Project.
In April 2022, the city completed a Local Road Safety Plan that identified and evaluated hot spots and systemic risks along its Railroad Canyon Road corridor and made recommendations on improvements and enhancements that could be made.
These recommendations included installing additional roadway lighting, retro-reflective signal plates, median barriers, chevron signs, enhanced crosswalks, and other warning devices.
In March 2023, the city announced that the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) awarded $1.2 million in grant funding for improvements to Railroad Canyon Road as part of its Highway Safety Improvement Program.
Per the grant guidelines, the construction phase must start by March 31, 2026, and the project must be completed by March 31, 2028. “We understand that this is a priority and are hoping to see construction begin next year,” the city said.
In May 2023, the council approved $340,000 for the Railroad Canyon Road Painting Improvements Project. The scope of this work includes pressure washing, repairing, and painting all city boundary walls, traffic signals, and light poles, and painting Southern California Edison utility boxes and bollards along Railroad Canyon Road.
In addition, Riverside Transit Agency will be replacing the blue bus stops with black bus stops at no cost to the city.
Funded by gas taxes, the Railroad Canyon Road Painting Improvements Project is anticipated to start next month and take approximately six to eight weeks to complete.
