The Canyon Lake City Council honored Kathy Barbay as June Citizen of the Month.
Barbay has served as a volunteer in the community for nearly two decades. Her volunteer work centers around seniors, the senior center, and Canyon Lake veterans.
As co-chair of the POA’s Senior Center Work Group Committee, Barbay assists with several annual senior center events, including the Holiday Boutique, New Year’s Eve Dinner-Dance, and Christmas Dinner Party.
As a member of the Sewing and Quilters Group, Barbay helps to create patriotic quilts for Canyon Lake veterans and active duty service members. The quilts are presented throughout the year and during the city’s annual Veterans Day event.

In addition to the Sewing and Quilters Group, Barbay is a member of the Woman’s Club, Mermaids of Canyon Lake Club, and Yacht Club. She is a former member of the Fine Arts Guild, Emergency Preparedness Committee, Travel Club, and Senior Chair Volleyball Club.
In June, Barbay was among seven Riverside County seniors honored at the Inaugural Senior Legacy Awards hosted by Riverside County Second District Supervisor Karen Spiegel. The event honors Riverside County senior citizens who have dedicated countless hours to the improvement of their neighborhoods and communities.
The Canyon Lake Citizen of the Month initiative was created in January 2021 to honor Canyon Lake residents for their service to the community. Each awardee is recognized by the mayor with a certificate. Community members are encouraged to nominate Citizens of the Month by submitting their names and a short paragraph detailing their good work to [email protected]. Residents of all ages are eligible to be nominated for this award.
