The Canyon Lake City Council recognized theater teacher Leslie Vecchione as April Citizen of the Month.

Vecchione has served on the Canyon Lake Community Theatre Board for more than 15 years. Her involvement with the group began in 1993 when she first moved to Canyon Lake. On the very day she arrived, Vecchione auditioned for and won the role of the Wicked Witch of the West in the production of The Wizard of Oz, marking the beginning of her extensive involvement with the group.

Since then, Vecchione has contributed her talents to more than 40 Canyon Lake Community Theatre productions. Not only has she graced the stage with her performances, but she has also nurtured the artistic growth of countless children.

“I have directed many and performed in some,” Vecchione said. “Honestly, it’s been the best time of my life. It’s so great that families have a place to come together to meet new people and form lifelong friendships. When we audition kids, we take everybody. If there isn’t a role, we find a role for them. They become part of our theater family.”

Vecchione’s commitment to the arts extends beyond Canyon Lake Community Theatre. She dedicated 23 years as a teacher at Elsinore High School, where she taught theater classes and directed productions, leaving lasting impressions on generations of students.

The Canyon Lake Citizen of the Month initiative was created in January 2021 to honor Canyon Lake residents for their service to the community. Each awardee is recognized by the mayor with a certificate. Community members are encouraged to nominate Citizens of the Month by submitting their names and a short paragraph detailing their good work to [email protected]. Residents of all ages are eligible to be nominated for this award.
