The Canyon Lake City Council presented a proclamation to the fire department in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 6 through October 12.
Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse, along with newly appointed Battalion Chief Jeff Roberts and firefighters Tim O’Marra, Matt Green, and Ryan Moore, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the department.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” strives to educate the public about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.
Chief LaTendresse announced that the fire department is now conducting free home smoke alarm inspections for residents who request them. This initiative is aimed at ensuring the community’s safety by promoting the proper installation and maintenance of smoke alarms in every household.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes with no or non-working smoke alarms. When working smoke alarms are present in the home, the risk of dying in a home fire is cut by 60 percent, according to the latest National Fire Prevention Association research.
Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. The fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
