Canyon Lake Firefighters Association requests recognition as official Collective Bargaining Unit with City of Canyon Lake

The Canyon Lake Firefighters Association is in the process of requesting recognition as an official Collective Bargaining Unit (CBU) with the City of Canyon Lake and has filed under the Myers-Milias-Brown Act (MMBA) with the California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB). This process is expected to be completed in a couple of months.

“This is very common in the fire service for the association to represent the firefighters in pay benefits and working conditions, and is not meant to be adversarial in any way,” Captain Brennain Gorter, Canyon Lake Firefighters Association president, said. “The reason for this is simple, we want to ensure the longevity of the fire department that was created for the city and maintain the professional level of service the community deserves.”

The MMBA provides that the governing body of a public agency shall meet and confer in good faith regarding wages, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment with representatives of recognized employee organizations. The MMBA defines meeting and conferring in good faith as having the mutual obligation to personally meet and confer promptly upon request by either party and continue for a reasonable period of time in order to exchange freely information, opinions, and proposals, and to endeavor to reach agreement on matters within the scope of representation.

“This will not change how we engage with the community, nor does it change our status as a nonprofit association,” Gorter said. “It is just one of the missions of the Canyon Lake Firefighters Association. We continue to be forever thankful for the support and love we receive from the community and will continue to do our part to make Canyon Lake an amazing place to live.”

Made up of nine full-time firefighters, the Canyon Lake Firefighters Association was established in July 2022 and recognized by the State of California in August 2022. Its goal is to ensure the protection of its members, while simultaneously providing support and fellowship to various charities, nonprofit groups, and other vested agencies within the city of Canyon Lake. Its vision is to work closely within the community to ensure the continued support and endearment of the citizens and visitors while prioritizing its members’ health and protection through competitive wages, benefits, and working conditions.
