Canyon Lake History: Movie actor highlights Canyon Lake’s first Pro-Am Golf Tournament

Canyon Lake’s first annual Pro-Am Golf Tournament was held at the golf course on June 27, 1971. The event was highlighted by the appearance of actor James Garner.

Garner played the course and was said to be “delighted with its championship qualities, the velvet-like greens and lush fairways.”

The 144 players participating in the tournament were divided into 36 teams of three players each. Three teams tied for first place, shooting a 21 under par, and divided the first place money.

The first place winners included the teams of E. Cressy, R. Anauf, D. Solomon, D. Hahn, T. Sepulveda, D. Kirkhart, B. Honrihan, R. Mund, and L. Houston.

The team of O. Moorman, A. Sears, and G. Lopez came in second place. The third place winners were the teams of J. Howard, G. Juric, and R. Stewart.

A buffet dinner sponsored by the Corona Land Company followed the tournament.
