Mavis Schutz snapped this photo of the dam during sunset on January 7.
The construction of the Railroad Canyon Dam was started in 1927 and completed two years later. The lake is a drinking water reservoir and plays an important role during periods of peak customer water demand.
The reservoir covers approximately 525 acres, has 14.9 miles of shoreline, and has a storage capacity of approximately 12,000 acre-feet. The reservoir is supplied by stormwater runoff from the San Jacinto River and Salt Creek.
The dam and reservoir are owned by Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District. The Canyon Lake POA leases the recreational surface rights through an agreement with EVMWD.
