Canyon Lake Jr. Lifeguard Program tryout dates announced

California State Parks in collaboration with the Canyon Lake Enrichment Activities and Recreation (C.L.E.A.R.) Foundation will be hosting two Jr. Lifeguards tryouts in Canyon Lake for this summer’s Jr. Lifeguards Program at Lake Perris. The tryouts/program is for kids ages eight to 15.

Tryouts will be held on Sunday, April 3, and Sunday, May 22, at 10 a.m. at Sunset Beach. Participants must be able to swim 100 yards in under three minutes and tread water for two minutes. Those who meet the qualifications will be invited to enroll in the program at Lake Perris. Bus transportation to Lake Perris will be provided by the City of Canyon Lake through ARPA funds.

Enrollment for each two-week session of the Jr. Lifeguard Program at Lake Perris is $260, with a $20 discount for siblings. A rash guard and patch are included. The C.L.E.A.R. Foundation is hoping to sponsor those with financial hardship.

Participants will be required to wear navy board shorts (boys) and a black or blue one-piece swimsuit (girls), which will be available for purchase at the time of enrollment. Optional T-shirts and hoodies will also be available.

The program teaches kids the basics of First Aid and CPR, aquatic safety, various water rescue techniques, and the natural and cultural resources that the California State Parks system has to offer.

The program emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and aquatic safety while introducing young people to safe marine and aquatic recreation opportunities. The program is designed to provide quality water safety education while improving young people’s physical conditioning, their understanding and respect for the environment, and their respect for themselves, their parents, and their peers.

Lifeguard Coordinator Jon Hernandez of California State Parks will be available to answer questions at the C.L.E.A.R “Coffee and Conversation” meeting on March 26. For more information about this meeting, click here.

If there is enough interest in the program this summer, the program, and not just the tryouts, will be held in Canyon Lake next year.
