New military mom and Canyon Lake resident Suzy Bowman wanted to honor fallen service members and show her support for her son and other service members who recently joined the military by participating in the Gold Star Luminary Initiative.
On Sunday, Bowman, with the help of community volunteers, set up a display of 250 bags with flickering candles on the lodge lawn. Once completed, the group held a moment of silence to honor the fallen. Those in attendance included former and current military service members.
“I wanted to show my son and his platoon what an amazing support system we have in the Canyon Lake community,” Bowman said. “As a new military mom, I am learning from daily lessons ways to honor veterans. I am so appreciative for their service.”
Gold Star Family’s Day is held on the last Sunday in September to honor families of soldiers lost in battle. Gold Star Family’s Day had its beginnings in 1936 as “Gold Star Mother’s Day” as a way to honor the mothers of soldiers who had died in combat.
The mission of the Gold Star Luminary Initiative is to promote awareness of Gold Star Family’s Day and urge organizations and individuals in communities throughout the United States to light luminaries at dusk on the last Sunday of each September in honor of our fallen heroes.
