The two-year terms of POA Board Directors Jeanne O’Dell and Tom Nathan end on May 13. The term also ends for Director Chris Poland, who has elected to run for a second term. O’Dell has decided not to run again due to health issues. Nathan has served two two-year terms and is not eligible to run again.
In a letter to its members, the POA thanked O’Dell for her two years of service and Nathan for his four years of service.
O’Dell has been a part-time resident of Canyon Lake since 1998 and a full-time resident since 2006. She was the owner/operator of Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant from 2010 to 2017. She is an active member of the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce and a member of several Canyon Lake clubs.
O’Dell began serving on the Facilities Review Committee in 2010, a role she continues today within the Facilities Planning Committee. Her volunteer experiences in Canyon Lake led her to focus on making certain that projects and expenditures were completed/purchased at the best value and that the community could develop an understanding and sense of fellowship and pride of ownership through open and comprehensive communications.
“Jeanne’s experience and service as treasurer led to expanded monthly project expenditure reporting and the development of the budget model covering operations and contributions to the reserve funds,” the POA said.
“Budget development must not only address the required mandates but also be value-based with everything linked to the board’s goals and objectives. Contributions to the reserve funds must be based on up-to-date reserve studies and a thoughtful philosophy for funding. Her work with the reserve sub-committee and assistance with the procurement of the next-generation reserve study will serve the community as it advances with a more accurate accounting of what needs are expected.”
O’Dell has contributed more than just vision and participation in collaborative decision-making. “She literally documented the processes that were needed, wrote the reports, built the spreadsheets, provided the Board Action Items necessary for board consideration of her ideas,” the POA said.
“She is a model, proactive director that did the work needed to cause change and refinement. As most who attended the board meetings and workshops observed, Jeanne was often the first to speak and offer thoughtful commentary about the issues being discussed. She most often made the motions that allowed the board to focus their decision-making in a manner that considered the broad range of views and desires being considered. She accomplished what most directors and candidates only talk about.”
Nathan has been a resident of Canyon Lake since 2001 and semi-retired since 2014. Tom was a member of the Rules Committee, Recreation Committee, and Finance Committee. Elected to the board in 2017, Nathan has served two two-year terms.
“Tom’s deep understanding and appreciation of Canyon Lake’s amenities combined with his financial and operational expertise allowed him to contribute to the evolution of many of our facilities and processes,” the POA said.
“Tom was a strong supporter of all the projects and led the revitalization of the north ski area. He did his part to help stabilize our budgeting and operational practices to bring year-end results closer to expectations through better planning and execution. He contributed to helping the Canyon Lake POA look to the outside for customers to increase the revenues generated by our restaurants and golf course that successfully brought down the subsidies to those amenities.”
Nathan assisted with the transition of the POA’s financial activities and accounting processes and was the proponent of a new dues structure that would have eliminated most of the user fees. “His fresh ideas were always good and stimulating, even if they did not mature into acceptance,” the POA said.
Now that he will no longer have a commitment to the hours required to perform his POA duties, Nathan said he will have the time to focus on more things in his personal life.
