Canyon Lake resident Mark Vermillion, 61, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, mayhem, and elder abuse.

On October 8, deputies responded to a residence on South Fork Drive in Canyon Lake after Vermillion called dispatch and stated that he had just attempted to murder his mother with a hacksaw.

Deputies located the victim in the master bedroom with half of her right foot severed and performed life-saving measures, according to the sheriff’s department. The victim was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center and listed in stable condition. Vermillion was detained at the scene.

Lake Elsinore Station Investigations Bureau arrived at the location and served a search warrant. During the search warrant service, investigators located a possible note left by the suspect.

Vermillion was transported to Cois Byrd Detention Center and booked on charges of attempted murder, mayhem, and elder abuse. His bail was set a $1 million, jail records show.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Investigator Andrade at the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station at 951-245-3300.
