Canyon Lake resident named Student of the Year, Student-Athlete of the Year

Canyon Lake resident Hayden Benham was among the Lake Elsinore Unified School District students selected as students of the year.

The Student of the Year program culminates the Student of the Month program, which recognizes 7 students each month. Benham was named Student of the Month in February.

Benham was honored earlier this month at the 25th Annual Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce Student of the Year Scholarship and Recognition Dinner. He was presented with a scholarship and a gift basket.

The 18-year-old Temescal Canyon High School student-athlete has always been an exceptional student. He received the Boy of the Year award in 5th grade and was first in his class all three years of middle school.

A former Canyon Lake Little League player, Benham plays on the Temescal Canyon baseball team. In 2019, Beham received the Temescal Canyon Junior Varsity Baseball MVP award. He received the Student-Athlete of the Year award in 2019 and 2021.

Beham is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program. He has a 4.5 GPA and has received honor cords for English, math, and social science. Beham also received a Seal of Multiliteracy award, an award given by the Riverside County Office of Education in recognition of high levels of attained proficiency in English and at least one other world language before high school graduation.

Benham will be attending UC Santa Barbara where he will be majoring in economics and accounting. He aspires to be a sports manager or analyst.

Benham’s proud parents are Tiffany and Cary Benham. He has four younger siblings, Kennedy, 15, Skyler, 13, and Avery, 7. The family has resided in Canyon Lake since 2008.

Benham said he loves God, family, and his country. His favorite scripture is Psalms 28:7.
