At the May meeting of the Canyon Lake City Council, the council approved an amendment to Chapter 12.04 of the Canyon Lake Municipal Code, officially establishing the 45 mph speed limit on Railroad Canyon Road within city limits.
When the city made changes to Railroad Canyon Road, no formal speed survey was adopted at that time. In 2024, the city hired a consultant to conduct an Engineering and Traffic Survey to determine if Railroad Canyon Road speed limit adjustments are in order and to establish an enforceable speed limit in compliance with the California Vehicle Code. In order to enforce speed limits using radar, speed limits must be set in accordance with the California Vehicle Code.
The survey evaluated factors such as speed, accident history, and roadway characteristics. Based on the findings, the consultant recommended retaining the existing speed limit of 45 mph to maintain safe and consistent travel conditions.
