Canyon Lake to reopen November 9

Canyon Lake is expected to reopen for all recreational activities today, November 9, following a week-long closure for treatment of golden algae. The treatment was conducted in both the main lake and East Bay and aims to improve current water quality conditions and reduce the risk of future fish mortality.

The Canyon Lake Property Owners Association (CLPOA), in partnership with Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD), conducted the chelated copper algaecide treatment. The second treatment is expected to take place in approximately two weeks.

The cost of the lake treatment will be shared between the CLPOA and EVMWD, with additional technical expertise provided by the Metropolitan Water District and third-party consultants.

While the treatment is intended to reduce the algae, golden algae can reappear when environmental factors such as temperature and rainfall become favorable.
