The Canyon Lake Tuesday Work Group (TWG) held a divot party this morning and filled more than 1,000 divots on the golf course. About 35 volunteers worked in teams with each team filling divots around three holes. The project took about an hour to complete. Volunteers were treated to free coffee and muffins.
A divot is a piece of turf that is cut out of the ground in the course of playing a stroke. Divots also refer to the hole left where the turf was gouged out. The divots are filled with a mix of sand, dirt, and seed. This process helps to speed up the healing process of the turf.
At the recommendation of the Green Committee, the POA Board of Directors recently approved a new rule that mandates all golfers using the golf course to carry refillable sand bottles and to fill their divots. Sand bottles are available at the Golf Shop. In addition to filling the divots on tees and fairways, golfers are required to rake bunkers and repair ball marks on greens.
The TWG was formed in 1973 and drafted its charter in 2003, becoming a standing committee with the primary responsibility to perform volunteer work that will beautify and improve the Canyon Lake Golf Course. During the 2020/2021 season alone, the TWG members logged 2,609 service hours.
In addition to their normal efforts to beautify the golf course, TWG crews are responsible, in whole or in part, for many of the major improvements seen on the course today. A few of the notable projects include setting the giant boulders at each tee and mounting the bronze plaques, the installation of all the cement benches on the course, assisting with the installation of the post clock at the putting green, and rebuilding the rock hillside below the 14th tee box. In 2020, the TWG helped transform the hill near hole 17 with the installation of a replica of Canyon Lake’s iconic lighthouse.
