The Canyon Lake Quilters recently honored veteran Scott Pauley with a handmade patriotic quilt in recognition of his military service. The quilt was presented during the April meeting of the Canyon Lake POA Board of Directors.
Enlisting later than most, Pauley was already in his late 30s when he enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard as a 15T Blackhawk crew chief. His drill instructors jokingly referred to him as “Old Man” or “Grandpa,” but that didn’t faze him. Pauley proved his resilience by ranking in the top 15% of his platoon for physical fitness and earning an expert rating on every weapon system he handled.
After completing basic training, Pauley briefly returned home before being deployed to Kuwait and later to Iraq. Stationed at Joint Base Balad, he accumulated nearly 500 flight hours, supporting combat operations both day and night. During these missions, he faced the harsh realities of war, which deepened his appreciation for his own country.
Even after returning home, Pauley continued flying locally as part of his extra duties. One such duty led to a unique opportunity—he appeared in a Blackhawk helicopter featured in the movie Man of Steel.
After eight years of service, Pauley retired and went on to work at SpaceX, where he has been employed for the past eight years. In his current role as a technical trainer, Pauley teaches new technicians how to build rockets.
The Pauley family relocated to Canyon Lake about five years ago. Despite the long commute to his job in El Segundo, Pauley says the drive is worth it. “When I drive through the gates, it relaxes me, like driving into a resort,” he said.
The Canyon Lake Quilters’ heartfelt gesture serves as a reminder of the community’s appreciation for its veterans. Pauley’s service, dedication, and continued contributions are a testament to his unwavering commitment to his country and his community.
