The Canyon Lake Tuesday Work Group (TWG) wrapped up its 2020/2021 season with its annual Appreciation Dinner on June 24 at the lodge. This year’s dinner featured an Elvis theme, music by Kenny Rice, and award presentations.
Sam Theodora was presented with the coveted Golden Shovel Award for his outstanding service to the Canyon Lake community through his contributions within the TWG. The recipient of the Golden Shovel Award is determined by a vote of the members.
Jim Lippen was presented with a 40-year pin in appreciation of his 40 years of volunteer service.
Twenty-year member Cy Peterson presented Chairman Sam Theodora with a plaque he made commemorating the TWG establishment.
The TWG was formed in 1973. In 2003, the TWG drafted its charter, which was approved by the POA, making it a standing committee with the primary responsibility to perform volunteer work that will beautify and improve the Canyon Lake Golf Course. During the 2020/2021 season alone, the TWG members logged 2,609 service hours.
In addition to their normal efforts to beautify the golf course, the TWG crews are responsible, in whole or in part, for many of the major improvements seen on the course today. A few of the notable projects include setting the giant boulders at each tee and the mounting of the bronze plaques, the installation of all the cement benches on the course, assisting with the installation of the post clock at the putting green, and rebuilding the rock hillside below the 14th tee box. In 2020, the TWG helped to transform the hill near hole 17 with the installation of a replica of Canyon Lake’s iconic lighthouse.
The TWG meets every Tuesday at 8 a.m. from October through June. The average age of the members is 76. The group is in need of new members and welcomes those who are interested in volunteering. To volunteer or for more information, contact Sam Theodora at 951-244-4474 or 951-526-7032.
