During this week’s Maximum Enforcement Period, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers maintained a strong presence on roadways statewide, focusing on reducing dangerous speeds.
During the 24-hour enforcement effort to crack down on speeding, CHP officers issued 19,564 citations between 6 a.m. on April 28 and 5:59 a.m. on April 29,
Officers issued 11,567 citations to drivers speeding under 100 mph, and 200 speeding citations to drivers traveling over 100 mph.
“Speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes on California’s roadways,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said. “When drivers choose to exceed safe speeds, they reduce their ability to react and increase the risk for everyone on the road. Slowing down is one of the simplest steps that drivers can take to protect themselves and others.”
Last year, based on preliminary data from the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, more than 110,000 crashes resulted from unsafe speeds. These crashes led to more than 400 deaths and injured over 68,000 people.
CHP urges drivers to obey posted speed limits, adjust speed for road and weather conditions, and stay focused and drive responsibly.
