For the first time in the city’s history, the City of Canyon Lake’s Finance Department has been honored with the prestigious Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).
The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award was received for Canyon Lake’s fiscal year beginning July 1, 2025.
The report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the program’s high standards, which include how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device.
“That means the document needs clear financial policies, thoughtful long-term outlooks, personnel and program budget details, departmental goals and performance measures, easy to understand summaries, a user-friendly layout, and more, all crafter for transparency and clarity,” City Manager Arron Brown said.
The GFOA also notes that award recipients have pioneered efforts that improve the quality of budgeting and are examples for other government agencies to utilize.
“This award isn’t just a plaque, it signals that our budget meets best practices recognized across North America,” Brown said. “It tells our residents, partner agencies, and even credit rating bodies, that Canyon Lake is committed to transparency, strong financial planning, and responsible stewardship of public funds.”
According to Brown, out of roughly 40,000 eligible entities, only about 1900 have received this award. “We did it on our first try, and I’m so proud.” Brown said.
Brown acknowledged the city’s Finance staff for their hard work, long hours, and attention to detail.
Established in 1906, the GFOA represents public finance professionals across North America. With more than 20,000 members, including federal, state/provincial, and local finance officials, the organization plays essential roles in planning, funding, and executing various governmental activities in their respective areas. Its primary objective is to promote the highest quality standards in public finance.
