During the September 3 meeting of the Canyon Lake City Council, the council recognized resident James Godoy as Citizen of the Month.
Godoy was one of three men who sprang into action when they spotted a vegetation fire on August 12 along Highway 74 near Peach Street in the City of Lake Elsinore.
The men quickly retrieved shovels from their vehicles and began working to contain the blaze. While attempting to control the fire, they were joined by another passerby in a truck equipped with a water hose.
While the first arriving firefighters focused on extinguishing the fire, Godoy stayed to assist with traffic control until additional support arrived.

The fire was reported around 11 a.m. and burned approximately two acres of private land.
The Canyon Lake Citizen of the Month initiative was created in January 2021 to honor Canyon Lake residents for their service to the community. Each awardee is recognized during a city council meeting and presented with a Citizen of the Month certificate.
Community members are encouraged to nominate Citizens of the Month by submitting their names and a short paragraph detailing their good work to [email protected]. Residents of all ages are eligible to be nominated for this award.
