With only four months to go until the new Canyon Lake Fire Department begins operations, the City of Canyon Lake and Interim Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse have made great strides in preparing the fire department to launch on January 1, 2022.
Since February, the city and Chief LaTendresse have ordered two new fire engines, established a budget and a
salary and benefits schedule, and began recruiting for 10 new fire department positions, among other important
accomplishments.
On September 1, the City Council approved funding of more than $109,000 for the purchase of equipment for various specialized services such as swift water rescues and vehicle extrication. Additionally, the City Council approved two new changes to the Municipal Code, officially establishing the Canyon Lake Fire Department and amending the city’s Fire Code.
Chief LaTendresse has also worked with Riverside County Fire/CalFire on a transition plan for all fire prevention activities so that Canyon Lake residents do not experience any delays in new building inspections and permits.
The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation recently awarded a $29,280 grant to the soon-to-be-formed Canyon Lake Fire Department. The funding is being applied toward equipment. “That equipment is starting to come into the fire department now,” Chief LaTendresse said on Tuesday.
The fire department’s new patch and logo were recently unveiled. The patch was inspired by designs
submitted by the public during a community Patch Design Contest. Each firefighter will wear this patch on their uniform. The new logo will appear on all Canyon Lake Fire Department apparatus and letterhead.
