The City of Canyon Lake monument located on Railroad Canyon Road was destroyed during a single-vehicle traffic accident on Saturday, April 8, at approximately 3:30 a.m.
The accident occurred due to the driver falling asleep, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The driver showed no signs of intoxication or impairment, the department reported.
A new monument has been ordered, according to Mike Borja, City of Canyon Lake administrative service director. It will cost approximately $20,000 to $25,000 to replace the monument, Borja said. The cost includes installation and lane closures.
The city plans to submit a claim for reimbursement for the cost of damages.
