In light of Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent announcement to re-open the state as of June 15, the city is proceeded with planning its annual events.
The Veterans Day Celebration will be held on Thursday, November 11. The 2nd Annual Winter Wonderland is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 4. The date for the State of the City/30th Anniversary Gala event will be determined at a later date. In addition to these events, the city is adding a new event, per the request of Mayor Castillo.
In line with this year’s Memorial Day weekend Park Hopper event hosted by the POA, the city will host a small ceremony honoring fallen heroes on Saturday, May 29, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park in the Towne Center.
The event will feature Mayor Castillo placing a wreath at the memorial while a bugle player performs Taps. Complimentary coffee and donuts will be served and a military vehicle will be on-site for photo opportunities. In addition, city staff will be present to promote the city’s Military Banner Program and to accept signups for veterans who wish to be recognized at the Veterans Day Celebration in November.
Council approved a budget of $30,000 for the 2nd Annual Winter Wonderland, $20,000 for the State of the City/30th Anniversary Gala, and $10,000 for the Veterans Day Celebration.
On September 2, 2020, the funds for last year’s canceled events were redirected to make improvements at the Veterans Memorial Park, which included upgraded electrical, a larger artificial tree, and an expanded area for the Veteran Brick Program. After an assessment of the park and the required upgrades, staff determined that the full $50,000 will not be required to complete the project. Council approved using $2,000 of that budget to fund the upcoming Memorial Day Event.
