Community, local dignitaries come together to celebrate grand opening of Canyon Lake Fire Department

The City of Canyon Lake celebrated the grand opening of its fire department on Saturday. The event was attended by approximately 200 community members, as well as local dignitaries and representatives from the California State Assembly, California State Senate, Riverside County Board of Supervisors, Menifee City Council, Wildomar City Council, Eastvale City Council, March Air Reserve Base, and the Rincon Fire Department.

City Manager Chris Mann welcomed the crowd and praised the city council members for their efforts in informing the city’s own fire department. Battalion Chief Michael Samuels led the Pledge of Allegiance. Mayor Jeremy Smith introduced the dignitaries, and Chief Jeff LaTendresse introduced his crew and staff.

Attendees were treated to a lunch catered by The Urban Craft Eatery, desserts, a DJ, and tours of the fire station, fire engines, and the REACH Air Medical Services helicopter.

The crew received several gifts from residents, including a custom Wahoo board game and a $1,000 donation from the Canyon Lake Association of Men for a new barbecue for the station’s barbecue island.

The Canyon Lake Community Volunteer Fire Company was formed in May 1978. In 1980, the volunteer company formally established Canyon Lake Fire Station 60. In 1986, Riverside County Cal Fire began staffing Fire Station 60 and handled department operations until January 2022.

In November 2020, the city council directed the city manager to take all action necessary to open a municipal fire department by January 2022. On January 1, 2022, the City of Canyon Lake officially took over the responsibility of fire operations for the city and renamed the station Canyon Lake Fire Station 1.
