Construction is underway for a Canyon Lake community garden at the north end of Evans Park on Schooner Drive.
The community garden will provide an opportunity for community members to grow their own gardens in raised planter beds. Each individual gardener is responsible for their own garden and assigned planter bed.
The rules and planter bed rental fees are still to be determined by the POA Rules and Regulations Committee and approved by the board.
Shortly after the Community Gardeners Club was formed in February 2022, the club presented the POA with the idea of a community garden. In May 2022, the POA granted the club sanction status. In June 2022, the state granted the club 501(c)3 status.
In March 2023, the POA Board of Directors approved $16,000 in funding for grading, irrigation, sod removal, and the installation of a fence for the community garden.
“Hopefully, we will have a grand opening in time for fall planting in October,” Kelly Lopez, founder of the Community Gardeners Club, said. “As time goes on, we would like to continue to improve the community garden by adding improvements such as shade structures, picnic tables, and benches. We hope to achieve these goals through our club’s fundraising efforts and the support of the community and POA.”
The Community Gardeners Club meets on a monthly basis for meetings, outings, and workshops. The dates and times vary. Annual club membership is $25.
