A Corona man has died while in custody at the Larry Smith Correctional Facility.
On Wednesday, March 18, George Ortiz, a 62-year-old resident of Corona, was discovered experiencing a medical emergency inside a housing unit cell at the Larry Smith Correctional Facility.
Custody staff and jail medical personnel administered life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. Ortiz was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators from the Sheriff’s Corrections Central Investigations Unit and Coroner’s Bureau responded and assumed the investigation. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, there are no signs of foul play.
