Held this past weekend, the Canyon Lake Ski Club’s two-day Memorial Tournament included a diverse group of water skiers. The youngest skier was eight years old and the oldest was 73 years old.

With 157 pulls, the tournament had one of the largest turnouts in the number of ski rides pulled in many years

Many of the collegiate skiers from the San Diego State University Ski Team skied their personal bests. Several Canyon Lake residents also skied their personal bests, including Emi Horton in Slalom (1.5 buoys at 38 off), Taylor Horton in Trick (6,080 points), and Thad Epting in Slalom (1.5 buoys at 38 off).

The skiers’ scores in a sanctioned event are applied to their regional and national rankings and help to qualify them to compete at next year’s Western Regional Championships and U.S. Water Ski Nationals Championships. Both will be held in Southern California.

“The Canyon Lake Water Ski Club thanks all of the support from official judges, scorers, drivers, safety team, and volunteers who drove pick-up boats, dock started skiers, announced the event, held the flag for the ceremony, and provided lunch,” President Scott Larson said. “Thanks also to the POA Marine Patrol and maintenance team who placed the judging towers and repaired the pavilion before the event.”

Founded in 1969, the Ski Club was one of the first organized clubs in Canyon Lake and is an affiliated club of USA Water Ski, the national governing body for towed watersports in the United States underneath the United States Olympic Committee. The Ski Club has established itself as one of the nation’s most successful ski clubs by hosting numerous sanctioned tournaments, producing world-class certified waterski officials, and being the home to world, national, and regional champions.
