Elevated levels of cylindrospermopsin, a toxin associated with harmful algal blooms, have been detected at several locations throughout Canyon Lake, prompting the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association to issue an advisory.
Recent Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) testing conducted on August 19 identified elevated levels of cylindrospermopsin at five locations: Sunset Beach, Holiday Harbor Park, Happy Camp, Sierra Park, and Indian Beach.
Sunset Beach and Holiday Harbor Park have been placed under the “Orange Warning.” At this level, swimming is not advised.
Happy Camp, Sierra Park, and Indian Beach have been placed under the “Yellow Warning” level. At this level, swimming is allowed but contact with algae should be avoided, and children should be kept away from algae. Do not drink the water or use it for cooking.
Advisory signs are posted at the affected locations. Residents should avoid visible algae or scum.
As with any lake, ocean, or river, Canyon Lake’s aquatic ecosystem cannot be compared to a swimming pool that is treated with chemicals to ensure water quality. If you choose to use the lake for swimming, keep in mind that natural lake processes occur, and there may be times when the water quality for recreation may pose a health risk.
