Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD) addressed recent reports of sulfur or “rotten egg” odor coming from Canyon Lake.
EVMWD confirmed that Canyon Lake is experiencing seasonal lake turnover, a natural process that typically occurs in mid-November. “The lake has not fully settled yet, which can cause natural odors to linger,” EVMWD said. “These smells come from organic material in the lake and are a normal part of this process. Once the lake stabilizes, the odors will fade.”
Lake turnover is temporary and cannot be sped up. EVMWD emphasized that while the odor may be unpleasant, it is temporary and not unusual.
