The family of Jason Eilola-Coye, the 19-year-old whose body was discovered by a fisherman in Canyon Lake on March 14, invites the Canyon Lake community to join them for a wreath-laying ceremony this Sunday, March 28, at 5 p.m. at the north ski area dock, which is near the location Jason was found.
“It will be exactly two weeks on Sunday that they found him and that just seems like an appropriate time to do it,” said Jason’s grandmother, Diana Hart. The family chose the time of 5 p.m. because Jason’s body was discovered in the lake at that time.
According to Hart, there was no evidence of drowning or external trauma. The family is hoping the toxicology report will provide them with more answers.
While there are no signs of foul play, Hart said this is a suspicious case since Jason was found in the lake with no clothes on.
Although Jason suffered from mental health issues, Hart said her grandson was a modest boy who didn’t like to be cold or in water. “He actually just hated water,” Hart said. “He was not the kind of kid who always wanted to swim and be in the water. He was the one sitting outside in his sweatshirt and his blanket on.
While it is possible, Hart believes that it is unlikely that her modest grandson took off his own clothes. “My thought with this is that it wouldn’t be like him, no matter where he was, to just take off his clothes,” she said.
Hart is hoping to locate Jason’s clothing and is asking residents who use the north ski area or hike around it to be on the lookout. Jason was last seen wearing sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and tennis shoes, but he had been missing for days so he could have changed his clothing.
