Sonja Kehnt Garibay relocated from Corona to Canyon Lake three years ago. After settling in Canyon Lake, Sonja joined the Jr. Women’s Club and immersed herself in volunteering for her new community.

As a member of the Jr. Women’s Club, Sonja served on the Rocktoberfest, Wine Festival, and Health Fair Committees. She currently serves as the chair of philanthropy and chair of scholarships.

This year, Sonja joined the Veterans Day Committee and was part of the team that organized Canyon Lake’s Veterans Day celebration.

On December 17, Sonja will be installed as the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce’s director of community events, a volunteer role she is looking forward to.

Outside of Canyon Lake, Sonja helps the homeless, veterans, immigrants, and refugees through her volunteer work at three organizations: Corona Norco Mission, Working Wardrobes, and Upwardly Global. She also volunteers twice a year as a guest speaker at Biola University and Chapman University.

Sonja has spent the last 20 years in the recruiting industry and is now a manager for a big four firm.

“My passion is to be a light,” Sonja said. “I find different avenues to help people in need, whether it be in my community, my nation, or the world.”
