In a moving tribute to the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, the Quilters of Canyon Lake presented handmade patriotic quilts to five Canyon Lake veterans during a heartfelt ceremony held during this year’s Fiesta Day event on May 24 at the Canyon Lake Lodge.
The honorees, Johnny Juarez, Dave Nickel, Sharon Curcio, Dennis Franks, and Joe Sloan, were each recognized individually and presented with a unique quilt, each stitch reflecting the time, care, and gratitude of the dedicated members of the Quilters of Canyon Lake.
Johnny Juarez served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2002 to 2006, completing two combat tours in Iraq.
Dave Nickel served in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1967, during which time he was stationed at Vandenberg Space Force Base and worked on the Titan Missile Project.
Sharon Curcio served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1988 until her retirement in 2012. She became a warrant officer in 1996 and was stationed at Guantanamo Bay on active duty from 2003 to 2004.
Dennis Franks served as an Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1954 during the Korean War.
Joe Sloan served in the U.S. Navy from 1977-1983. He is the son-in-law of Dennis Franks, who was also presented with a quilt.
The Quilters of Canyon Lake continue this tradition as part of a broader mission to recognize and appreciate veterans within the community. The quilts are presented throughout the year and during major Canyon Lake events. The recipients are chosen by nominations and through free raffles for veterans.
