A routine trip to the mailbox turned into a terrifying accident for an elderly Canyon Lake couple and their infant granddaughter when a freak accident caused their golf cart to flip, leaving the grandfather pinned underneath.
According to the couple’s daughter, the couple had placed their baby granddaughter in the golf cart for a quick ride to the mailbox when the accident occurred on Tuesday evening on Skylink Drive. As the grandfather made a turn, a cord from his oxygen tank became entangled around the brake mechanism, preventing him from slowing down.
Unable to stop, the golf cart flipped over. The grandfather was pinned beneath the overturned cart, while the grandmother and baby were thrown during the crash but landed on top of him—a fall the family believes was cushioned by his body, potentially preventing more serious injuries.
Despite her own injuries, the grandmother managed to free her husband from under the golf cart before emergency responders arrived.
The man suffered a serious head injury that required multiple staples, according to his daughter. His wife sustained road rash, and the baby received abrasions but remained alert and stable. The couple and their granddaughter were transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for their injuries and released the same day.
“It was a freak accident,” their daughter said.
The family, though shaken, is grateful for the outcome and for the grandmother’s quick thinking after the crash. They hope sharing their experience will raise awareness and help others avoid similar accidents.
