Canyon Lake firefighter/engineer Chico Sanchez has spent his career answering calls, helping neighbors, and serving alongside fellow firefighters. But away from the firehouse, he has found a different way to build strength—on a yoga mat.
Sanchez recently celebrated completing his 500th yoga class—a milestone that represents more than just a number. It represents hours of showing up, putting in the work, and continuing even when it would have been easier to skip class.
In December 2021, one month after Sanchez joined the Canyon Lake Fire Department, he contracted COVID-19 and spent seven days in the hospital. Following his hospitalization, Sanchez spent another two months at home on oxygen. It was during his recovery that his son suggested he try yoga.
Sanchez took his son’s advice and, on February 16, 2022, he walked into the yoga studio for his first class. The following month, he attended 16 classes.
Sanchez believes yoga played a role in his recovery and return to work two months later. What started as a way to gain strength and return to work quickly became a way of life for Sanchez. “I find yoga to be therapeutic for my body, both physically and spiritually,” Sanchez said.
From the earliest days as a Fire Explorer with the Pasadena Fire Department in 1983 to his career today, his commitment to the community has remained a constant. And now, after 500 yoga classes, he has added another achievement to a career already defined by service.
