The Canyon Lake POA Board of Directors on Tuesday approved funding in the amount of $138,400 from the Capital Improvement Fund for solar-powered, motion-activated mailbox lights throughout the community.
In 2016, solar-powered, motion-activated lights were installed at the mailboxes located at Sorrel Lane and Black Horse Drive. The board received positive feedback from the members who use these mailboxes.
In December 2020, the POA installed the fixtures at the mailboxes on Longhorn Drive at Appaloosa Court and on Cruise Circle at Continental Drive, as recommended by the Facilities Planning Committee. The purpose of installing the fixtures at these additional locations was to determine if there would be any environmental impact.
To complete the project, 102 fixtures will be installed at a cost of $1,200 per fixture plus a contractor labor allowance of $400 per fixture for the first 40 fixtures. The additional 62 fixtures will be installed by the POA Operations staff upon replacement of the mailbox slabs.
The first 40 fixtures will be installed by the contractor within six months. The goal is for Operations to install the remaining fixtures within one year after the contractor installs the first 40 fixtures.
According to Operations Director Steve Schneider, the fixtures are approximately 10 feet tall, the color matches the color of the mailboxes, and the lights stay on for approximately five minutes once activated.
