Steve Matson, age 70, passed away peacefully at his home on April 14, 2025, after recently being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
Steve was born on August 14, 1954, in Glendale, California, to parents Hal and Dorothy Matson. He was the oldest brother of siblings Greg and Kathy Matson. His parents were avid campers and boaters and loved traveling to local beaches and lakes, where Steve learned to swim, ski, and boat at a young age.
After graduating from high school, Steve enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he was responsible for repairing and calibrating the equipment used by mechanics to service and maintain aircraft engines. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for six years, where he not only committed himself to serving his country but also met the love of his life, Pam, at the chow hall on Norton Air Force Base. They were married just nine months later, on August 31, 1974, and went on to share more than 50 wonderful years together.
Following his service in the Air Force, Steve was offered a position in sales with AMMCO equipment. He eventually decided he preferred to repair the equipment rather than sell it.
A hardworking and dedicated man, Steve then built and ran his own automotive service repair company for over 23 years. He took great pride in being a “mechanic’s mechanic,” always willing to lend his expertise and help others. His work ethic and integrity left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Steve’s love of boating and skiing carried over to his family life. Steve, Pam, and their three daughters, Joanna, Lisa, and Chrysta, spent many summers boating and enjoying the water sports he dearly loved. In 2003, they moved to Canyon Lake, CA, and lived there for over 20 years, where he found joy and peace in the community and the water he enjoyed so much. His happiest days were those spent on the lake, surrounded by his family. Whether towing the kids behind the boat or simply enjoying the sun on the water, nothing brought a bigger smile to Steve’s face than a day out boating with the people he loved.
Above all else, Steve was a devoted husband, father, and papa. He is survived by his beloved wife, Pam Matson, his daughters, Joanna Lothspeich, Lisa Fiedler, and Chrysta Taylor, and his cherished grandchildren, Devin, Jamisen, Makailyn, and Kingston Lothspeich, Colin, Abigail, Zackary, and Madelyn Fiedler, and the newest addition, Jackson Taylor. He is also survived by his siblings, Greg and Kathy Matson. He is joined in heaven with his parents, Dorothy and Hal Matson.
Steve’s life was one of quiet strength, deep devotion, and genuine kindness. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A private family service will be held to honor his life on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Canyon Lake Lodge.
